INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECT OF CUTTING PARAMETERS ON SURFACE ROUGHNESS IN THE MANUFACTURING OF HARDOX 450 MATERIAL BY MILLING METHOD

The milling process of Hardox steel is essential in the production of components for industrial applications that require extraordinary strength. The approach evaluates the surface roughness by utilizing metrics such as Ra, Rz, and Sku. The Ra value is utilized to quantify the average disparity in height of the machined surface. A decreased Ra value leads to a more polished surface, improving the quality of the part's surface and maximizing its performance. A low Ra value is an essential indication in milling operations for attaining the desired surface quality. The Rz value quantifies the mean deviation between the maximum and minimum points on the machined surface. Reduced Rz values increase the surface's smoothness, hence boosting the wear resistance and performance of the item. The Sku value is utilized to quantify the amount of little irregularities on the machined surface. Reduced Sku values promote the evenness and consistency of the surface, hence enhancing the visual attractiveness and performance of the object. Exerting control over these parameters is of utmost importance in the milling process of fabricating Hardox steel. By employing optimal machining parameters and selecting suitable cutting instruments, it is possible to achieve the desired surface quality and enhance overall performance. This enhances the durability of the parts, minimizes the roughness of the surface following the machining process, and optimizes the manufacturing procedures. This study reports the results of the investigation carried out on the milling procedure of Hardox 450 steel material. The research examined the effect of different cutting parameters such as feed rate, cutting speed, depth of cut and radial plunge on Hardox 450 steel material. The experiments done using the Taguchi methodology demonstrated that the variables of cutting speed and radial plunge exerted a significant influence on the level of surface roughness. Moreover, the cutting speed was shown to be the most significant characteristic when examining its effect on kurtosis. Hence, it is recommended to select precise cutting parameters (e.g., a cutting velocity of 60 m/min, a feed rate of 0.06 mm/min, a depth of cut of 0.2 mm, and a radial plunge of 20 mm) to get the minimum roughness values.
